O Leaning House of Rice Krispie Treat
How overloaded with candy you are
Above the toothpicks holding you up
The Marshmellow goo there lies

Where on the cocoa Krispie
The great yummy candies stand by
To take our girls, on a sugar induced whirl
As their parents stand mystified

Organized Mass Chaos

In other news our church had a family fun night on Saturday. Our family went, including Aunt Clare. We had pizza and then played a hilarious game that got everyone doing silly things like waddling like a duck, throwing food into each others mouths and wrapping people in toilet paper. A lot of laughter ensued.

Preparing Thankful hearts

Today was a day off for us. So we talked to the girls about the importance of freedom and Veterans. (Thank you Poppa!). But we also did a thanksgiving craft. It was fun to hear what Caroline was thankful for (hand was the one that surprised me the most. "well mommy, they do lots of things" we had quality time with scissors, glue, construction paper and tape. What could be better?

Big girl

Although she is really working on figuring out how to crawl (she is trying to get up on all fours), I'm trying to convince her sitting is fun. She will only sit for a few minutes before she starts squirming and trying to roll out. But she is doing pretty well with the whole holding herself upright thing.

Halloween part 2

>> Wednesday, October 31, 2012

When you want to be a lollipop ballerina princess for Halloween sometimes a costume change is required. So Caroline was a princess this morning. She was a ballerina (complete with bun) this evening. We acquired a lollipop while trick or treating. All is well. (Note that Anna's tastes are a little less nuanced and she was just a cheerleader.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween from our favorite princess and cheerleader. Caroline has informed me that she didn't want to be a mermaid for Halloween because that is what she wants to be when she grows up so it wouldn't be a costume. Being a mermaid would be for real. Irrefutable logic.

Hurricane Day

Well we have prepared Koller style--did the laundry, made coffee to drink cold later, found the flashlights, put out the corkscrew, put the kids cold medicine out, moved the pack and play to the basement and broken out the crayons. We have also played hide and seek with a book (a good way to play when there are only two people), and are planning a leaf book later. We have looked at the kids weather web sites while we have power. Now we just color and wait for the wind!

We are home and happy after our good trip to Portugal. As you can see, the girls had a good time and slept well after we wore them out running all over the place.
We figured out how to get both girls in one stroller, which worked well when we were downtown Lisbon on the pedestrian only streets. You can't really see her, but Anna is laying back in the stroller, behind Caroline. Caroline would hold the pacifier in Anna's mouth when she got fussy. Everyone was happy with the arrangement.
There were lots of trollies in Lisbon. One of them went in a big circle over downtown. I think it may have been Caroline's favorite part about being in Lisbon when we took a ride on the trolley (stopping half way at a big park with a playground).

The weather was perfect the entire time. We had a great time climbing up hills and looking out over the city.
This is a picture of Caroline and Jack attempting to break down the walls in the castle that wasn't far from where we stayed. This castle was at the top of the hill in the neighborhood where we rented an apartment.

We also happened to be in Alfama (the neighborhood we stayed in) while there was a folk festival going on. I took this picture from our table in the outdoor seating at the restaurant in the square. We truly couldn't have picked a country where the people were kinder or nicer to children. We showed up at this restaurant and Caroline announced that she really wanted spaghetti and french fries for dinner. Low and behold, that is precisely what they brought her (note--this combo was not on the menu). Anna was essentially a rock star the whole time, with all sorts of people coming up to her to say hi.

After Lisbon we went on to Evora, which is a walled city in the central part of Portugal. This is a picture of the girls enjoying our outdoor terrace at the hotel.

We got sandwiches from a little shop just down the street for dinner. As you can see, Caroline clearly needed her sunglasses while eating dinner. (She wore those sunglasses most of the day as she went around town. It was hilarious).
 Aren't we cute?
Here are Caroline and Jack up on a castle wall in a town called Obidos. She was pretty impressed that there were so many castles where princesses had lived.

All in all, while our first vacation with two kids was quite different from earlier ones it was a great family time. We were without the internet for nine great days. We got to just hang out together. And now to do the laundry...

So, do you think they might be sisters?

I laid Anna on our bed last week and took some pictures of her. Jack and I had done the same with Caroline, so I pulled out the pictures of her. I do believe these two little girls are related.

Of course, it also means that they can share clothes:

Box on sox

>> Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Ok we have no socks in this post. (It is too hot). But we do have a box. We got a bunch of things all at once from Amazon in a big box. So our dollies now have their own house in our living room. As you can see it has been expertly decorated (Caroline had her friend Ruthie over earlier today to help). Sadly the table for the dolls doesn't fit in the house. But, I am told that they are sitting in their back yard. I'm not sure why one of them is sleeping on the roof.

Botanical Garden

>> Saturday, August 18, 2012

We made a family trip down to the Botanical Gardens (right by the Capitol) this morning. There are inside an outside portions. I had been inside during the winter but hadn't been to the outside gardens before. So we made the trek downtown. The inside jungle area has a very high ceiling, with a walkway near the top. So Caroline and I went around while Jack stayed with Anna. Caroline was particularly impressed with the large leaves on the tropical plants. We then went outside and enjoyed the rose garden on a particularly lovely day where it was only about 85 degrees out. Hooray for being able to be outside without needing a shower 2 minutes after you step outside!

(As an aside, Caroline does have eyes under that hair. She has decided that she is tired of bangs so we are growing them out. She's in the hard--I can't get them to stay back because they are too short but they are too long to see stage).

Peach picking

>> Thursday, August 16, 2012

We went out west yesterday for a fun time with our friends the Robertsons. We went peach picking (and blackberries, squash and tomatoes). We now have all sorts of peach recipes all over the kitchen. The girls ran all over the peach orchard and pulled down a good number of peaches themselves. (Caroline bruised the ones she had in her own little bag beyond recognition but she had fun). We had a picnic afterwards overlooking the Blue Ridge. The kids got in the red wagon. The girls ran around. All in all it was a great time.

Of course, we got home late and no one had naps. So things devolved a bit at our house in the evening. But the hilarious part was when Caroline hit her head (no, that isn't the funny part) while I was trying to fill the baby bathtub in the bathroom upstairs. I turned off the water (I thought) and urged downstairs to apply frozen peas to the bump. Imagine my surprise when I heard a squish, squish when I walked into the bathroom later when the peas had remedied the bump. Yep, water not totally off. Baby bath overflowing all over. That's right--1/4 inch of water all over the floor. On the bright side, I used a soapy cloth to get the last of it up. Our bathroom floor is now REALLY clean.

All in all a fun day.

Couldn't take all the excitement

>> Sunday, August 12, 2012

Anna, after realizing she could reach the playmat friends with her feet went on a kicking spree. (We will teach her not to kick her friends later--after she learns to sit up, eat food and, all importantly, how to control her appendages). After all that excitement she passed out but continued to occasionally wave an arm or leg in the general direction of the elephant and lion in her sleep.

This picture reminds me of Saturdays when I was little...time with Daddy outside "working". I think Caroline is actually getting more done than I ever did. She hasn't taken 18 breaks or tried to hide a book outside so she can read it when she is supposed to be working. :)

VBS

>> Friday, August 3, 2012

This week was VBS week for our church. Caroline has had a blast. They have been learning all about God's promises, like He cares for us or He saves. The theme was an island one (Promise on Adventure Island). So I contributed by making the slightly off center life preservers at the top of this picture. (I thought of Scott because making them involved covering things with colored duct tape). I also helped iron the transfers onto the shirts. Caroline confirmed that they were "pretty." She has also learned that friends can lower people with Hirt legs down from a hole in the roof. That story required a little clarification at home that it is only appropriate when Jesus is on the first floor. (Baby dolls at our house have had some seriously hurt legs subsequently). She had a great week and is very upset to lean that fun "church school" won't happen every day.
