A Beautiful Day In the Neighborhood

>> Tuesday, June 30, 2009

It is another beautiful day here in D.C. Caroline I went outside and sat on a blanket under the shady trees on the mall. Of course, our little wiggle bug couldn't sit still for a picture. But, hey, you get the benefit of seeing her particularly cute socks.

Four Month Check Up

>> Monday, June 29, 2009

Caroline went in for her 4 month check-up today. She continues to grow right along. She is just over 25 inches long (which puts her in the 80th percentile for length, go figure). She is 13 pounds, 7 1/2 ounces--the 50th percentile for weight.

She is holding her head up just like she's supposed to and seems to be developing all of the other skills she is supposed to! Hooray for a healthy kid.

Now if only check-ups didn't come with shots...

Lots of Family

>> Sunday, June 28, 2009

Caroline got to meet lots of fun family this weekend.  As you can see, she was a little surprised to see all of them at the same time! This is a picture of Caroline playing with one of the very fun toys at her (great) Aunt Helen's house!

Caroline got to meet lots of fun people.

We all got to meet Nathan Daniel Kravetz! She was pretty intrigued by him.  She rolled over and checked him out.  She wanted to badly to be able to roll over to him.

Nathan is the son of my first cousin Brian and his adorable wife Stef.  I think that makes Caroline and Nathan second cousins.

At one point, she was holding his hand. Of course, I just wasn't fast enough with the camera! It was really sweet until we realized that she was just going to try to put it in her mouth!!

Caroline was 4 months old on June 23rd. Nathan is just 7 weeks old.

But, as you can see from this picture, they are pretty close to the same size.  Nathan is really long and so, proportionately, looks like he is about the same weight as Caroline.

Caroline does have an advantage of over two months of development though.  While we were trying to take pictures
Caroline also got to see her first cousin Micah again.

They had a good time trying to put the shapes in the shape block.

Micah continues to grow like a weed. He is just too cute for words. (His mom put more pictures up here).  His favorite word, I think, continues to be "ball."

Caroline also got to meet four of her great aunts and I managed to get three of them in the same picture. Aunt Ruthie is in the green, Aunt Helen is in the back and Aunt Jane has Caroline. (My cousin Donnie - which I think makes him Caroline's first cousin once removed) is the smiling guy in he corner).

Caroline was loved, cuddled and held by a number of people this weekend.

Another important milestone was my Aunt Jane teaching her tricks of the Lees family (my mom's family).  This is my Aunt Jane trying to teach Caroline the monkey--a very important skill that I too learned at a young age. Caroline was a little skeptical.

But she wasn't the only skeptical one this weekend. Nathan wasn't so sure about Donnie holding him. (O.k. in fairness, Nathan had a wet diaper when I took this picture. It is possible that was the real issue).  Nathan too got held and cuddled by the many adoring family members. Here he is with Aunt Ruthie!

Learning to Dance

>> Wednesday, June 24, 2009

My friend Katrice was in town for lunch last week and so we took Caroline out to enjoy the sunshine. As you can see, Caroline was quite taken with Katrice.

Katrice decided that she needed to learn how to dance (which clearly she does). So these pictures are from after we finished lunch and Katrice was giving Caroline dancing lessons!

Hysterical

>> Monday, June 22, 2009

When we were opening Father's Day presents last night, Caroline apparently got the giggles and just couldn't stop. Jack and I both thought it was hysterical too (her laughter is contagious). So, we thought we would share.

Happy Father's Day

>> Sunday, June 21, 2009

Happy Father's Day everyone!

This year was Jack's first Father's Day.  We celebrated by taking Caroline to her first baseball game. The Nationals don't exactly have the world's greatest record. But the games sure are fun!

I was able to get tickets off of stub hub in the last row of one of the lower sections.  This was very convenient for walking around with Miss Caroline in the baby bjorn.

Caroline was enthralled by the game most of the time. We think she was pretty interested in the very, very green field with all of the people in bright red uniforms running around.

We took her on a walk around the stadium about half way through the fifth inning.  This picture to the right is Caroline just on the first base side of home plate. (We stopped in the Nat's team shop, but they didn't have a cap small enough for Caroline).

She was a great spectator, especially given how little she is. After our walk around the stadium (when the Nats were down by four runs) Caroline took a little nap.
She woke up for the seventh inning stretch and seemed pretty intrigued by the singing.  I think she's a little disappointed that she didn't get a hot dog.

Later on Caroline and I gave Jack presents. As you can see from these pictures she thought the entire process was pretty funny.

I took a great video of her getting the giggles. I'll put that up in the next day or so.

Until then, Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there1

On a Jet Plane

>> Monday, June 15, 2009

This weekend, while Jack was in Howe, Indiana with friends from high school, Caroline and I went to Zionsville.  Caroline was appropriately spoiled by her doting Nana and Grandpapa.  She loved all of the attention and was pretty excited about smiling, making faces and giggling with her grandparents. She was particularly enamored with a cloth elephant that Nana had for her to play with. (I was having so much fun watching her I forgot to take a picture of that).

Caroline got to take a walk around Zionsville and see some of where I grew up. She also got to go to Zionsville Fellowship (the church I grew up in). She was good enough in the nursery that I didn't have to go get her!

I had a great time at home too. I got to see all the gardens that my dad has put in (they truly look professional - amazing). I had some great talks with my mom too. My parents have been cleaning out the attic lately. That meant that there were a number of boxes of mementos for me to go through. I decided we didn't need all of my weekly journals from third grade, but I did keep some fun stuff like my baby book. It was really fun to read and see the similarities (and differences) with Caroline.
Caroline also got to meet her soon to be godparents Kim and Jeff. As you can see, they took to her immediately (and really, who wouldn't?).  They were trying to feed her shortly before this picture (though she was being a little cantankerous). So, Jeff's got his burp cloth all ready to go.

Elliott was also great with Caroline (and I have to say, he was pretty good at making her giggle). He's got a great knack with babies it seems. She though he was pretty funny.

We missed seeing Olivia but are really excited to have them out here for Caroline's christening in July.

Speaking of Elliott being good with babies, he apparently knows what will make them smile. Caroline thought wearing his hat was pretty funny!

The late night joys of home ownership

>> Thursday, June 11, 2009

Life has been a little crazy at the Koller household recently. But, we thought things might be dying down a little bit. I got home from bible study last night and thought I would get a glass of wine, sit down and have a little quiet before going to bed early.

Ha ha ha

The basement apparently had some other ideas.  We just started running our air conditioning in the last few weeks. Apparently our air conditioner decided that draining correctly was way to much work. So it stopped.

This of course meant that slowly but surely (in the incredibly humid city that D.C. is), water seeped out into our basement.

Thank heavens, Jack noticed it last night when he went into the basement and found a wet spot in the carpet.  And so the fun began...

Luckily our dehumidifier had been borrowed by some dear friends. The husband came over at 11 last night to return it and was a wonderful friend and helped Jack move furniture and pull up the carpet.

The good news is it is just water. The bad news is that there was water!!  After pulling up the pad and back the carpet we have generally gotten everything dried out. We'll put it all back together in the next few days.

Caroline, of course, was completely unconcerned by all of this! She is, as usual, just happy about life! But, that may have something to do with the fact that she went to bed at 6:45 p.m. last night!

New Ears

>> Wednesday, June 10, 2009

As you can see, Caroline continues to be quite the smiley kid. And she gets bigger every day! It used to be that Caroline barely took up any space in her bouncy seat. But, now she can reach out and grab the toys on it and, as you can see, is getting near the top of it. We thought it was particularly funny that she has gained some new ears as she gets bigger. She seemed to think it was pretty funny too!

Animals and the Zoo

>> Monday, June 8, 2009

There are few things that are more fun than watching a child at the zoo. This is especially true when the child is absolutely adorable (and no, I don't mean Caroline this time - though she's pretty cute too).

While Micah was here this weekend, we went to the National Zoo.  We started out at the Kid's Farm where they have all of the standard farm animals - cows, rabbits, and even some donkeys.

Micah was able to help us out with the sounds of the animals, particularly the cow's moo!

Caroline wasn't quite so good at the animal sounds.  She was much better at playing with the straps on her stroller and checking out all of the people walking by. But, she seemed to enjoy herself.

The gorilla area was also pretty exciting. There was a brand new little baby gorilla that we got to see. As you can see here, Micah was pretty enthralled by watching the gorillas moseying around.
